Why Corrosion-Resistant Coatings Are a Manufacturing Must
If your metal parts are exposed to moisture, chemicals, or harsh operating environments, corrosion is not a matter of if. It is a matter of when.
For manufacturers and OEMs, that reality carries real consequences. Corroded components lead to premature part failure, unplanned downtime, and costly redesigns that eat into production budgets and project timelines.
Corrosion-resistant coatings exist to stop that cycle before it starts.
Understanding how the right protective coating works and how to choose one can make a measurable difference in how long your parts perform and how efficiently your operation runs.

What Does Corrosion Actually Cost Manufacturers?
Corrosion is more than surface rust. When metal substrates degrade, the damage moves inward, weakening structural integrity and compromising the tolerances your parts were engineered to hold.
The downstream effects for manufacturers often include:
- Premature component failure in the field
- Warranty claims and product returns
- Unplanned production shutdowns
- Expensive engineering redesigns
- Loss of customer confidence
These are predictable outcomes when metal parts go unprotected in demanding environments. The good news is that most of this is preventable with the right corrosion-protective treatment applied before your parts ship.
How Corrosion Resistant Coatings Work
A corrosion resistant coating creates a physical barrier between your metal substrate and the environmental conditions that cause oxidation and degradation. That barrier keeps moisture, chemicals, and atmospheric exposure from reaching the base material.
But effective corrosion protection does not start with the coating itself. It starts with surface preparation. At Precision Coating, our conveyor line uses an integrated five-stage pretreatment system that addresses surface contamination before any protective coating is applied.
The process works like this:
Stage 1: Acid etch removes laser scale and light rust from the part surface
Stage 2: Fresh water rinse clears residual acid and loosened contaminants
Stage 3: Buffered wash solution applies an iron phosphate conversion coating that improves coating adhesion
Stage 4: Second fresh water rinse
Stage 5: Sealant application using a rust inhibitor compatible with both ferrous and nonferrous substrates
This combination of wash, rinse, and sealant is a deliberate sequence engineered to give your coating the best possible foundation for long-term performance.
Which Coating Process Is Right for Your Parts?
Not every corrosion-protective solution is the same, and not every coating process fits every application. The right choice depends on your part geometry, operating environment, performance requirements, and production volume.
Here is a brief overview of the processes we use most frequently for corrosion protection:
Electrostatic Powder Coating
An electrostatic spray gun applies a positive charge to the powder particles. Because your metal parts are grounded, the charged powder bonds tightly to the surface and builds a thick, even coat. After heat curing, the result is a durable, chip-resistant finish that holds up against environmental exposure.
This process works well for flat and moderately complex geometries where a consistent, protective film thickness is critical.
Fluid Bed Powder Coating
In a fluid bed process, your parts are heated and then dipped into a bath of fluidized powder particles. The heat causes the particles to melt and fuse directly to the surface, forming a thick, corrosion-resistant film.
This method is especially effective for parts with complex shapes or recessed areas that are difficult to coat evenly by spray.
Plastisol Coating
Plastisol is a liquid vinyl coating that produces a thick protective finish, typically between 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch. It fills surface imperfections and provides excellent protection for irregular or molded parts operating in corrosive environments.
If your parts need a soft but tough outer layer that absorbs impact while resisting chemical exposure, plastisol is worth evaluating.
What to Consider When Evaluating a Coating Partner
Choosing a coating process is only part of the decision. Who applies it matters just as much.
When evaluating a coating partner for corrosion protection, look for:
- Proven pretreatment processes that prepare the surface properly before coating
- Multiple coating capabilities so the right process can be matched to your specific part
- Quality assurance checkpoints throughout the line, not just at final inspection
- Long-term partnership orientation rather than a transactional, one-off mentality
- Industry experience in the sectors where your parts will operate
At Precision Coating Technology & Manufacturing, we have been providing engineered coating solutions since 1988.
Our facility in Denver, PA serves manufacturers across Pennsylvania, the Mid-Atlantic region, southern New England, and the Midwest. We also offer pickup and delivery services for select clients within 50 miles of Denver, PA.
We work with manufacturers in aerospace, architectural, military, agricultural, and industrial machinery markets, and our goal in every engagement is to help you protect your components, reduce production risk, and build a coating process you can rely on long-term.
Protect Your Parts Before the Environment Does
Corrosion does not wait for a convenient time to affect your product. The longer metal parts go without corrosion-resistant coatings, the higher your risk of field failures, costly rework, and damaged customer relationships.
The right protective coating, applied correctly and with proper surface preparation, extends the service life of your components and protects the engineering performance your product was designed to deliver.
